Farm to Table: Where Learning, Food and Community Meet
Around the holidays, many of us gather around the table but for too many, there’s little to put on it. One in four people in Canada live in a food-insecure household—a level of need that demands our collective response.
At Flemingdon Park Ministry (FPM), we are responding with purpose.
Farm to Table is our newest food literacy and cooking program, designed especially for newcomers facing isolation, language barriers, and the rising cost of food. Through 24 hands-on sessions participants will cook nutritious, affordable meals rooted in cultural traditions—guided by community members from Afghan, Iran, Iraq, Slovakia, Bangladesh, Sri-lanka, and Ukraine backgrounds. Each participant receives local ingredients – many from our Common Table Farm, translated recipes, kitchen kits, transportation support, and an honoraria for newcomer cooks.
“I did not go to school in my country. Learning English is slow for me. But in this class, I can follow, I can learn. I made a soup with squash I had never used before. My kids ate it all! Now I try new things and feel more brave in the kitchen and outside. I want to keep learning.”
Participants—often new to Canada— get the opportunity to practice English, improve math skills, gain confidence, and overcome social isolation. The need is real, and the impact is already visible. Between September 2024 and September 2025, FPM welcomed 13,000 clients for drop-in coffee and snacks, distributed food to 3,840 seniors, and bread to 15,000 recipients under Cobs bread distribution.
We recognize that cooking together, learning new skills, and sharing traditions can help reclaim confidence, connection, and dignity.
We’re seeking to raise $38,000 to deliver the Farm to Table program in full. Your gift will cover the essentials: ingredients, translation, kitchen kits, transportation, and community-based facilitators.
Your generosity can help ensure that everyone in Flemingdon Park has a place at the table.
